Rewarding mediocrity

The Bedford City Schools are coming to the taxpayers for an additional 5.9 mills of our hard earned money. This request is based upon an "Effective" rating on an 'Ohio Report Card". The district achieved this rating after years of being rated near the bottom and needing "continual improvement". So the district would have Bedford voters believe that merely doing the job they are supposed to do anyway, is deserving of more money. This is the way government-types think.
The private sector rewards exceptional performance by paying for it. It risks losing "performers" to competitors if they don't pay adequately. Government and government school bureaucrats, on the other hand, believe that going from "terrible" to "O.K." entitles them to the "taxpayer ATM." There is no competition to lose to, so good performance becomes a goal that can be realized, but always only "with just a little more money." Bedford voters should say no to the school district until such time as it has established a reasonable track-record of consistent performance before they give-in to the perennial "just a little more" plea.
