New chorus
The Hudson Community Chorus will present its winter concert Dec. 5. The first weekly rehearsal is Sept. 14 at 7 p.m., at the First Congregational Church of Hudson, 47 Aurora St. New singers are welcome and encouraged to join. The Hudson Community Chorus is consists of volunteer singers from Hudson and nearby communities, under the direction of a professional artistic director Melissa Fucci. Young singers needed The Summit Choral Society is seeking young singers in second through eighth grades who wish to advance their singing skills and techniques to be a part of the Summit Children's Choir Program. Non-competitive assessments/auditions will be scheduled by appointment only at Steinway Hall, at 715 East Buchtel Avenue, near Summa Akron City Hospital and The University of Akron, on Sept. 10 from 4:30 until 7 p.m. Each child is individually evaluated and placed in the training division appropriate to his or her age, personal ability and experience. The singers then attend weekly training sessions during the school year. Illusion Factory announces shows Barbara Ballance, director of The Illusion Factory, Akron's professional theater for young audiences, announced the theater's 2010-2011 Tour Season. The season includes "The Nightingale," based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, is about the Emperor of China who has grown blind to the needs of his people, and how the song of the Nightingale changes all that. The show is best for ages 6 through 12 and is available October through June 2011. The second tour show, "The Hat," is by award-winner Brian Way, and suitable to tour ages 3 to 7. This audience-participation show is especially suitable as a first time theater experience. It is about a man who cannot get a new hat off his head -- and when he does, a new one appears in its place. "The Hat" is available for bookings January 2011 through June 2011. Both shows can be performed alone or in conjunction with a package of 16 thirty-minute workshops. The Illusion Factory is also seeking professional adult actor/teachers between ages of 21 to 45 for its 2010-11 school tours. Volunteers needed for Polar Express The National Park Service at Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) and Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) are seeking volunteers to spread holiday cheer aboard The Polar Express. This holiday program is based on Chris Van Allsburg's enchanting book "The Polar Express." Children, clad in pajamas, board the train in Akron or Independence and travel through Cuyahoga Valley National Park to hear the story of The Polar Express, enjoy hot cocoa and cookies, and sing carols on their way to the North Pole. Through the train's windows, children see holiday characters, the silhouettes of elves hard at work, and Santa. Volunteers are needed for costumed characters, read the story, assist in creating a festive atmosphere in the car, serve cookies and hot cocoa, and more. Training will be provided. The Greater Cleveland Chorus of Sweet Adelines will present its annual show, Cleopatra, Queen of d'Nile Sept. 11. Guests include The Men of Independence, 2010 Johnny Appleseed District Chorus Champions; B.L.A.K Velvet, 2010 Region 17 SAI quartet champions; T.G.I.F., 2010 Region 17 SAI Quartet second place medalists; FLAIR!, 2010 Region 16 SAI Quartet third place medalists. The event will be at the Stow-Munroe Falls Public Library, 3512 Darrow Road in Stow. The featured item of the evening will be a beautiful blue zircon and diamond pendant necklace set in 14 carat white gold on a 16" 14 ct. white gold cable chain courtesy of Abshire & Haylan. Other auction items include two round trip airplane tickets from AirTran, an airplane ride from Commercial Aviation at the Kent State Airport, over 40 autographed books from popular authors, Budweiser stadium seats, a handmade quilt, golf and spa packages and much more. The Dessert Extravaganza is the Foundation's major fundraiser of the year. The money raised is used to assist the library in funding large projects that benefit the Stow-Munroe Falls communities. The Akron Art Museum teams up with the Akron-Summit County Public Library and Summit Artspace for a day of free family events during the monthly Sunday Sampler on Sept. 5. At the Akron Art Museum, open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., guests can enjoy free gallery admission, including admission to the special exhibitions "Detroit Disassembled: Photographs by Andrew Moore" and "Arctic Re-visions: Isaac Julien's True North." Scripts and Scribes will meet Sept. 2 at 7 p.m., where the program will focus on learning how to make rubber stamps. The Earlyjas Society will have its annual Fall Jazz Festival at the Holiday Inn Select in Strongsville Sept. 24 from 6 p.m. to midnight; Sept. 25 from 11 a.m. to 4:40 p.m, and 6:30 p.m. to 12:15 a.m.; and Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The public is welcome.
