The Akron Symphony Orchestra begins its 59th season with "Opening Night" on Sept.11, 2010 at The University of Akron's E.J. Thomas Hall at 8 p.m.

Maestro Christopher Wilkins will lead the Orchestra and the Akron Symphony Chorus in a program of music composed to bring healing and comfort, including Benjamin Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem, Mozart's Ave verum corpus, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5.

"Opening night begins with unseen voices, singing the national anthem from the uppermost balcony of EJ Thomas Hall," Wilkins said. "Then follows the explosive opening of Britten's Sinfonia da Requiem, composed in 1944 as a defiant response to the commissioning agency, the Imperial Japanese government. The work was heard throughout the world following the tragedies of September 11, 2001."

There will be a pre-concert discussion with Wilkins at 7 p.m. and a talk back Q&A after the concert.

Ticket prices range from $20 to $40. Call 330-535-8131 for tickets.
