The summer months are usually a bit slow when it comes to activities and programs conducted by area veterans' organizations. This should change in short order, as people return from much-needed vacations and other diversions. And so we'll look at some upcoming programs planned for the benefit of veterans and the community. VETERAN HONORS: The Hospice of the Western Reserve will honor veterans at a special program Aug. 24, 2 p.m., at Grande Village in Twinsburg. For more information, call Erika Svitak at 216-502-4449. AMERICAN LEGION'S PORTAGE CLAMBAKE: The American Legion's Portage Council will sponsor its first of what is planned to be an annual clambake Sept. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Streetsboro Post 685, at 10001 Hudson-Aurora Road, Streetsboro. Cost for the bake is $22 per person and the public is invited. The bake includes clams, half chicken, potato, corn on the cob, break and butter. Beverages will be available at the post canteen. For more information, call the post canteen at 330-650-9594. VETS' BUSINESS SYMPOSIUM: The 7th Annual Veterans Business Symposium will be Nov. 10 at Kent State University's Student Center in Kent. The program is presented by The Ohio Procurement Technical Assistance Centers in cooperation with the U.S. Small Business Administration. Government and private industry representatives will be on hand to support the empowerment of veteran-owned businesses. Attending veterans will have an opportunity to learn from a variety of business development resources, benefit from government contracting workshops, network with Federal and State buying activities, and meet with government, prime contractor and industry buyers. The event will provide veterans, recently returning servicemen and women, reservists, guardsmen and their spouses with valuable support and information on how to start a small business. For more information, contact John Renner at the Cleveland District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration, 216-522-4167, or Jane Stewart, NEO-PTAC, at 440-357-2294. * * * Send info for use in this column to Ron Seman, 5811 Renwood Drive, Parma 44129, or e-mail: SemanRJ@aol.com.
