Cleveland -  Ohio's Democratic Party leader has called for the resignation of the party chairman in Cleveland amid a federal corruption investigation.

State chairman Chris Redfern said Tuesday the effectiveness of Cuyahoga County Democratic chairman Jimmy Dimora has been irreparably harmed. Redfern's comments came just hours after Dimora sent party leaders a letter saying he will take a leave of absence as party chair on July 1.

Dimora, a county commissioner, has been identified as a target of a yearlong corruption investigation. He hasn't been charged and denies any wrongdoing. Redfern has not called on Dimora to step down from the county commission.

There was no immediate comment from Dimora on the call for his resignation. A message seeking comment was left at his office.
