Northfield Village -- Fire departments from throughout the area helped battle a house fire that claimed the lives of two family pets.

But no people were injured in the fire reported about 4:30 p.m. at 107 Chestnut Ave. on the corner of Electric Boulevard. A Northfield Village firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion and has since recovered.

Fire Capt. Jason Buss said the house was not livable and estimated damage at about $150,000 in structural loss and an additional $50,000 in personal belongings.

One individual who was in the house got out safely, but two dogs died, according to Fire Chief Gary Vojtush.

A third dog was recovering at Sagamore Hills veterinary hospital, he said. Firefighters also rescued a lizard and snake.

Buss said a teen-age girl sleeping in the house woke up to a smoke-filled room and ran outside to where a female relative was sitting in the back yard listening to music with headphones.

Buss said the woman attempted to get into the house to free the family's three small dogs who were in a bedroom, but was unable to due to heavy smoke.

In the meantime, a neighbor called the fire department, Buss said.

The fire started in the bedroom that had been occupied by the dogs, but Buss said the cause remained under investigation June 15.

"It looks like it initially started burning in the walls ... and from there spread up into the attic and all through the attic," Buss said.

He said an addition containing an upstairs attic, bathroom, kitchen, laundry room and bedroom was destroyed. The remainder of the house, about a third larger than the addition, sustained smoke damage.

About five or six people occupied the home. They were making arrangements to find a place to stay June 15, Buss said.

Northfield Center, Macedonia, Boston Heights, Hudson, Twinsburg, Bedford, Oakwood all sent mutual aid.
