Northfield Village -- An 18-year-old Rosewood Avenue man was found guilty March 24 of first-degree misdemeanor assault and second-degree misdemeanor criminal damaging in connection with the March 17 assault of a village woman walking her dog on Cranbrook Drive.

Police said they also charged a 41-year-old Cranbrook Drive man, a relative of the woman, with two counts of first-degree misdemeanor assault after he allegedly attacked the Roseland man and a female relative in retaliation for the earlier assault. The Cranbrook Drive man is scheduled for an April 14 mayor's court date.

According to police, the woman told police she was walking her dog on Cranbrook about 8:30 p.m. on March 17 when a car pulled up and someone inside insulted her. The woman said she said something back and the driver, who police said was later identified as the Rosewood man, got out of the car and punched her in the eye.

Police said that during their investigation, a witness reported seeing a car matching the description given by the woman pull into the driveway of a nearby home at about the time of the assault.

Police said that at about midnight, they responded to the Cranbrook home after receiving an anonymous report that two men were fighting outside the home. Police said that when they arrived, they discovered the Cranbrook man had allegedly assaulted the Rosewood man and the female relative. Police said he was arrested and released on a personal bond.

The Northfield Village Fire Department took both women to UH Bedford Medical Center for treatment of minor unspecified injuries. Paramedics treated the two men at the scene for cuts.

The Rosewood man, who was identified from a description given by the woman, was arrested and released on a personal bond.

According to Northfield Village Mayor's Court records, the Rosewood man pleaded no contest to the charges. He was given a 180-day suspended sentence and fined $750. Police said the criminal damaging charge was for breaking the side mirror on the Cranbrook man's sport utility vehicle.
