by Jeff Saunders Reporter Macedonia -- The old Denny's Restaurant on Highland Road had not been closed even a week when the location reopened as the City Cafe on Nov. 21. Owner Tara Wright, who was formerly a Denny's area manager said that when the underperforming Macedonia location was slated to close Nov. 16, she decided to lease the building and become an independent restaurant owner with about 23 employees. "I said, 'Let's see what we can do here,'" said Wright. The City Cafe is at 269 Highland Road, on the west side of Route 8,. It shares its entrance with the Day's Inn. Wright said the breakfast menu includes such fare as scrambled eggs, biscuits, pancakes and French toast. "I think wherever you go, breakfast is breakfast," said Wright. Lunches and dinners include steaks and a variety of sandwiches, including Phillies, clubs and triple roast melts. Desserts include fruit and cream pies, hot fudge cake, banana splits and sundaes. Wright said on Fridays and Saturdays, she serves specialty meals, items not on the menu that customers often ask her to fix. These have included macaroni and cheese, sweet potato casserole and blackeye peas. "Ever since the macaroni and cheese, I get calls, 'Do you have any more of that macaroni and cheese,'" said Wright. Wright worked for Denny's for 28 years, starting in California as a hostess. She moved up from there, working as a manager and as a "trainer," opening restaurants. "I opened about 200 restaurants across the country," she said. City Cafe is open Sundays through Thursdays from 7 a.m. to midnight and 24 hours on Fridays and Saturdays.
