Police News: Man reports $700 in coins missing from residence

Macedonia -- Police are investigating the theft of an estimated $700 in coins from a Shepard Road home.

The homeowner said he came home in the early evening Dec. 1 and discovered a rear door, which had been secured by a thin piece of wood and two nails, was ajar. Believing it had blown open, he nailed it shut again, using a thicker piece of wood. However, the man later discovered a 5-gallon glass water cooler bottle that contained the coins was missing from under a desk in a first-floor room.

The man said he could not remember when he had last seen the jar.

Police said the matter is under investigation, but reported they could not find any footprints, either inside the house or in the fresh snow outside. A neighbor, who had been home all day, said he did not see anything suspicious, police said.

Suspicious call

Dec. 2. Caller claims to be real estate agent: A city woman reported she got a call from a woman who identified herself as a real estate agent having difficulty finding homes to sell. The resident said she felt the call was suspicious because she was not trying to sell her home and the caller refused to give her name or the name of the company she worked for.

Theft

Nov. 26. Charges made at city business: A man reported someone used his credit card to make $319 in purchases at a Macedonia Commons Boulevard business early in the morning.

The man said he believed the card was either lost or stolen at a Euclid service station the night before.

Police are investigating and told the man to also report the incident to Euclid police.

Arrest warrant

Dec. 8. Macedonia police turn in prisoner: Macedonia police reported they had in custody a Birch Avenue man, 27, wanted by the Northfield Village Mayor's Court for failing to pay fines in connection with a driving without an operator's license charge.

The man was given a Dec. 23 mayor's court date and released on a personal bond.

Dec. 1. Police arrest man at municipal court: Police charged a 22-year-old Fell Avenue man with first-degree misdemeanor theft after arresting him at Cuyahoga Falls Municipal Court. The man was in court for a hearing on misdemeanor drug and drug paraphernalia possession charges, also filed by village police.

According to a police report, the theft charge stemmed from a theft report by the owner of a Route 8 business. Police said store security video footage showed the man allegedly taking a $48 bottle of alcohol without paying for it Nov. 21.

The man was released on a $50 bond.

Motor vehicle accident

Dec. 5. Police cite girl following accident: Police cited a 17-year-old Maple Heights girl with failure to allow an assured clear distance ahead, a minor misdemeanor, after a boy, also 17, reported she struck the rear of his car while he was stopped on Route 8 waiting to make a left turn on to Beech Avenue at about 10 p.m.

Police said there were no injuries, and damage to both vehicles was minor.

Dec. 4. Deer runs away following accident: A Canton man reported he struck a deer while driving on Ledge Road near Lee Eaton Elementary School at about 4:15 p.m.

Police said the man was uninjured, and damage to the front of his car was "moderate." The man said the deer got up following the accident and ran away. Police said they searched the area for the possibly injured deer, but were unable to find it.

Possible vandalism

Nov. 28. Car window shattered: A Brecksville woman reported someone may have hit her car's rear window while it was parked in the driveway of a Milford Drive home, causing it to later shatter while she was driving it.

The woman said that after staying at the home overnight, she was driving to work when the window suddenly shattered for no apparent reason. When she took the window to have it replaced, the woman said she was told that it is possible the window could have been struck earlier, causing unseen damage that may have caused it to break later.

The woman said she had a suspect in mind, but police said there was no evidence. The cost of replacing the window was not included in a police report.

Driving under suspension

Nov. 27. Police stop man on Maple Avenue: Police charged a 42-year-old Aurora man with driving under suspension, a first-degree misdemeanor, and driving without headlights, a minor misdemeanor, after they stopped him at about 8 p.m.

The man was given a Dec. 9 Northfield Village Mayor's Court date and released on a $50 bond.

Reckless operation

Nov. 27. Police say woman was doing "doughnuts": Police cited a Sagamore Hills woman, 23, with reckless operation of a motor vehicle after her car ended up in a ditch next to the parking lot of a Route 8 business.

Police said the woman told them the accident occurred while she was doing "doughnuts," intentionally causing the car to spin in circles on the snow-covered parking lot. No injuries to the woman were reported. Damages to the car were not described in a police report.

Theft

Nov. 21. Copper bars taken from cell phone tower: An AT&T employee reported someone took three copper bars, totaling about $700 in value, that were used to ground a company-owned cell phone tower on Route 8. The employee said the bars were last seen in late September. Police said there were no cuts made in the fence surrounding the tower and they were unable to find any footprints in the area. Police said they closed the investigation due to a lack of evidence.
