Police News: Sheriff's bomb squad determines Route 8 grenade a dud

Northfield Center -- An Ohio Department of Transportation employee reported finding a hand grenade in the construction area on Route 8 at Interstate 271 on Sept. 19.

According to a police report, the Summit County Sheriff's Office bomb squad determined the grenade did not contain any explosives. The bomb squad took custody of the grenade to destroy it.

No additional information was available before press time.

Property damage

Sept. 21. Rock damages car: A Dory Drive man reported someone threw a rock at his car, damaging the trunk lid, while it was in his driveway during the night.

Driving under suspension

Sept. 16. Deputy stops man on Shady Lane: An 18-year-old Olde Eight Road man was charged with driving under suspension, a first-degree misdemeanor, using the former owner's license plates, a fourth-degree misdemeanor, and marijuana possession, a minor misdemeanor, after he was stopped at about 6 p.m.

The man was given a Sept. 23 Cuyahoga Falls Municipal Court date and released on a bond.

Property damage

Sept. 16. Hydraulic fluid hits windshield: A girl and her mother reported that while the girl was driving her car through the construction area on Route 82, an oily substance splattered onto her windshield. The girl said she was unable to wash it off.

Police said they spoke to a construction supervisor, who said a hose on a construction vehicle broke and sprayed hydraulic fluid into traffic.

The supervisor said the fluid should wash off at a car wash. If not, the construction company's insurance would cover its removal, he said.

Sept. 15. Falling sign damages car: A man reported that while he was dropping off his wife at a Macedonia Commons Boulevard business the night before, a piece of the business' sign fell and scratched his car's roof and windshield. The man said he was filing the report for insurance purposes.

Sept. 13. Vehicle hit with eggs: A Laurel Drive woman reported someone threw eggs at her sports utility vehicle while it was in her driveway during the night. Police said there are no suspects.

Counterfeit money

Sept. 15. Bank reports counterfeit bill: A manager of a Route 82 business reported that a $20 bill the business took in the day before was counterfeit. The manager said the discovery was made by the business' bank after the business had deposited the money.

Theft

Sept. 14. Store recovers camera, but man escapes: An employee of a Macedonia Commons Boulevard business reported he chased an unidentified man after seeing him leave the store without paying for a $150 digital camera.

The manager said he followed the man to the parking lot, yelled for him to stop and asked him if he had a receipt for the camera. The man said no, put the camera on the hood of a car, then ran. The employee said he chased the man towards another business, but lost him.

A passerby told police he saw the man go into a drainage pipe that runs under Interstate 271, but police said they were unable to locate the man.

Sept. 6. Woman reports drill stolen: A Blueberry Lane woman reported someone went into her open garage during the day and took a $350 electric drill.
