Chuck and Rosemary Borton of Northfield Village celebrate their 55th anniversary in May.

The two met on a blind date on April 13, 1952. Rosemary, an 18-year-old from Maple Heights, and Chuck, a 19-year-old from Northfield Village, went to a drive in with friends and continued dating until they eloped May 25, 1953, the day they married.

At the time, the couple says, men had to be 21 years old to obtain a marriage license in Cleveland, so the couple went over the border to Angola, Ind. and were married by a justice of the peace.

After their marriage, Rosemary quit her job at May Co. in Cleveland, while Chuck worked at the Maple Heights aircraft parts manufacturer Jack & Heinz as a line inspector.

He later worked as a machinist, retiring from General Electric in the 1980s and retiring again from Semtorq in 2000.

The couple are members of Epiphany Lutheran Church in Northfield Center. Chuck is a member of Summit Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons, while the couple are both members of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Rosemary has been a member of Take Off Pounds Sensibly No. 1174, which meets in Sagamore Hills, since 1967.

They had three children, Greg, Pamela and Gary, who died in 2006, and have five grandchildren: Tracy, Tammy, Jennifer, Bob and Janine. The couple also have six great-grandchildren: Kylie, Kami, Carter, Aiden, Cody Lee and Kaci Lynn.

Another great-grandchild is expected this summer.

The couple plans to celebrate with family.
