Championship set for coed softball

The top two seeds met for the Bedford Recreation Coed Softball League playoff championship as the second seed, Finishing Touches by Vickie, pulled a mild surprise with a 4-3 win over regular-season champ Russell Equipment last month.

The focus of this game was defense as both shortstops, Finishing Touches Brian Clark and Russell Equipment's Rob Sebera, along with both left-center fielders Mike Fiorilli of Finishing Touches and Russell Equipment's Tom Canitia, who put on stellar fielding clinics. Fiorilli was also the star on the offensive end by knocking in three of his team's four runs.

Russell Equipment was held scoreless until the sixth inning when it scored two to cut the lead in half and looked like it would pull it out in the seventh.

After scoring one run to pull within one, Russell Equipment had the tying run in scoring position with one out. But a sinking line drive was caught and that runner was doubled off at second base to end the game.

Both teams had to win earlier in the evening to get to this championship game. Finishing Touches had to get by an upstart Unique Allstar team 12-6, while Russell Equipment downed Wild Streak 11-1.

This now sets up the regular-season champion Russell Equipment against the playoff champion Finishing Touches by Vickie for a best-of-three City Series Championship at Ellenwood Field this week.
