Preliminary grad test results show mixed improvement: Scores in reading, math, writing down, while marks in science and social studies increased, data showsJune 26, 2008
by Emily Canning-Dean Reporter Bedford -- Ohio Graduation Test results in the Bedford School District showed 10th-graders improving on some tests, but scoring lower on others, compared to last year. The test was taken in March and the results released last week by the Ohio Department of Education are preliminary and could change once they are finalized later this summer. "We are pleased that our school district retained standards in reading and writing, and we saw some improvement in our scores in science and social studies," said Marty Motsco, Bedford Schools superintendent. "It's important to remember that our 10th-graders have additional opportunities to pass the test during their junior and senior years," she added. "We will provide tutoring and other forms of intervention to help them pass the test, which is a requirement for graduation." Bedford results include: * In reading 75.2 percent of students who took the test were proficient or higher. Last year 85.5 percent were proficient or higher. * In math 58.6 percent were proficient or higher compared to last year's 60.8 percent. * In writing 77.3 percent were proficient or higher compared to last year's 85.8 percent. * In science 57.1 percent were proficient or higher compared to last year's 51.7 percent. * In social studies 64.3 percent of students were proficient or higher compared to last year's 60.6 percent. * Overall, 43.8 percent of students have passed all five portions of the test, compared to 37.1 percent last year. The state had 145,147 10th-graders students take the test, with 65 percent placing as either proficient or above in all five portions of the test, which is slightly down from the 65.3 percent last year.
