More than 400 Bedford High School students pledged to stay tobacco free as part of Kick Butts Day April 16. Now in its 13th year, Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism that empowers youth to speak up and take action against tobacco use at more than 2,000 events from coast to coast. At Bedford High school, students signed giant sheets of paper hung on the wall of the cafeteria during lunch periods. "I wanted our students to show that they were doing something positive," said 12th-grader Xavier Givner, who organized the event at Bedford High. He lost a grandmother to cancer. "By pledging to give up smoking, people on the outside (of Bedford High), can recognizes that this is a new generation and we feel differently about the need to smoke," Givner said. The event was co-sponsored by the Principal's Club, which is composed of presidents of all of the high school's extra-curricular organizations, and the Bedford High School Parent-Teacher-Student Association.
