by Emily Canning-Dean Reporter Oakwood -- When Chris Gibbs and his wife, Kenya, learned five years ago that they were going to become parents, they did research to find family-friendly places to go. But they never really found what they were looking for. "I'm not saying that stuff isn't out there, but a lot of places were either very expensive or they wanted you to make a commitment with a membership," Gibbs said. "So my wife and I discussed what we were looking for and drew up a business plan." The plan became a reality last summer when they opened Gibbers Playhouse at 26018 Broadway Ave., Oakwood. Gibbers, which is set on four acres with a 17,000 square-foot building, is open four days a week for open play time. Customers can also schedule parties at the venue. Open play is available Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. But Gibbs said private parties can be scheduled at any time. For times and dates of special events, log onto www.gibbersplayhouse.com. "We do birthday parties, theme parties, fundraisers, family reunions or even corporate functions," Gibbers said. On a monthly basis, Gibbers hosts special events such as an enchanted princess tea party, a dinosaur dig and craft parties. Gibbs says he plans to expand activities soon. He said he hopes to have a tutoring program in place within the next 30 days. The program will help students grades 8 through 12 prepare for standardized state test. Gibbs also said he wants to work with fitness instructors to offer "Mommy and Me" exercise classes as well as adult classes. E-mail: ecanning@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3166 Comments
