Bedford Heights -- A South Euclid collision repair shop could expand into Bedford Heights and could create 25 new jobs in the next three years.

Economic Development Director Marty Divito said Mayfield Collision, located on Mayfield Road in South Euclid, can begin work on its additional location on Aurora Road in Bedford Heights as soon as a rezoning of the site is approved.

Divito said Council approved legislation Dec. 4 that would rezone the site from B-2 community business district to an industrial district. The legislation must go before planning commission later this month then back to Council for final approval.

Divito said she believes this would be completed shortly after the first of the year.

Tom Griffin, owner of Mayfield Collision, said he believes the new location on Aurora Road will be up and running by mid-summer. He said there will be 10 employees when the business opens and he hopes to increase that to 25 over the next three years.

Divito said Mayfield Collision is planning on making $1 million in improvements to the site, which was the former home of Carpet Barn.

"The site is aesthetically challenging," Divito said, adding that the current building is old and the site looks run down.

"I am very excited about what Mayfield Collision is going to do," she said.

Griffin said he plans to build a new office area and completely gut the 18,000-square-foot production area.

"We will put in landscaping and other improvements," he said.

Griffin said he also would like to work with the schools, possibly creating some sort of automotive program.

"We have offered training and internships at our other shop," he said. "The collision repair industry is rare in that it is hungry for fresh young talent."
